Black Myth Wukong Review - Everything You Need to Know

Since the trailer was released back in 2020, I knew this game had more to offer. More than a good combat system and crispy visuals. Black Myth Wukong is more like a Soulslike game in the rich Chinese culture. The gameplay feels intense and resolute. It is one of the most stunning games to play this year. The entire gameplay is totally satisfying. Let me take you through the Black Myth Wukong Review to inspect and split each feature to understand and convince you to play this masterpiece.

Gameplay & Story of Black Myth Wukong

Players were expecting it to be more similar to God of War in gameplay. But it turned out to be more like a Soulslike game from FromSoftware. But players who love RPG games will be disappointed. There are all types of bosses to defeat. From mini-bosses to troubling bosses. Mini bosses are easy to defeat. But rough and tough bosses are hard to defeat. They keep you stuck for hours which makes it even harder to defeat.

The storyline refers to the gaming adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en. The player The Destined One is a realistic monkey with a mission. He woke to take a 40-hour-long journey to explore the six relcies of Wukong. The storytelling about the main antagonist presents a stunning animated vignette that is remarkable. With a mute protagonist and few side characters to speak about the storyline. It’s great to have the entire story known. Each six chapters is explained in various art styles. From sketching from storybooks to slow-motion transitions; you name it.

Combat Moves and Levels

Players will have to move from one to another shrine aka bonfires to refill their gourd. Gourd is a resting time to refresh their mana and health. Some levels are interlinked by focusing mainly on bigger bosses. Players need to maintain their stamina meter in order to avoid being hit. As there are no difficulty settings, the player will have to earn their success.

There is only one legendary weapon, Staff from the novel. Spells are crucial to use as they can be used to freeze their enemies or leave them open to attack freely. These attacks also depend on the chosen stances. There is no build system so different stances with various skills primarily fill up the Focus meter. To defeat a boss in-game, players will have to learn to read the room. Such as cast spells as they cost their mana and longer cooldown timer.

Besides spells, players can summon the enemy’s spirits to utilize their fighting skills to their benefit. A spirit roaster can help players choose and add more enemies too. Experimenting with them in battle and upgrading them is enjoyable too. Moreover, there are other plenty of goodies to explore. Like crafting materials, powerful armor, and treasure chests to improve health, mana, stamina, and overall performance.

Issues & Bugs with Black Myth Wukong

Black Myth Wukong Review cannot be justified without being honest with the game. The gameplay is satisfying, combat is splendid but the issues do frustrate you to some level. There are some technical issues that can negatively affect the game and also bring negative remarks. Shutter and freeze for a second might not be a big deal in smaller bosses but on nig bosses fight, it can be a fatal bug. Bumper actions are stuck for a second which truly gives headaches

The random switching between English and Chinese leaves me in utter confusion in cutscenes. Mostly audio drops black out your ability to understand the situation. This is a bit frustrating. The journey of Sun Wukong on his hard journey wasn’t clearly explained by the developers of GameScience. As an amateur will be confused without references to the storyline.

Black Myth Wukong has amazingly structured gameplay. Great graphics, attention-grabbing combat system, impressive gameplay – overall a fantastic game to play and enjoy. However, the bugs are a bit frustrating and make you restless for a couple of seconds. Don’t miss out on this gem and join Sun Wukong on this journey for exploration.

Black Myth Wukong reviews concluded with final remarks and ratings. I would rate it an 8.2/10 for the eye-catching visuals and amazing animation. However, looking forward to the latest patches for the bug fixes. You can check other game reviews from our Reviews archive to check which game to play next.
